2018 Club Captain Philip Charles Northam JP, IEng. FIHIE, MCIHT
I was born in Colwyn Bay, brought up in Abergele and played my first game of golf on the old Abergele golf course. Due to my work as a Highways Engineer, I moved around the Cheshire and the North Wales area and consequently have been a member of Abergele, Prestatyn and Dolgellau Golf clubs.
However, in 1977 I and my family settled in Llandudno and I joined Maesdu in 1978 and have been a member in one category or other ever since. During my first spell as a full playing member I achieved an 8 handicap but that didn’t last long and over the intervening years have risen steadily until now I am fairly comfortable and settled hovering around the low to mid teens.
My spell as a social member was due to a mid-life interest in sailing. I was a member of Llandudno Sailing Club, serving as Commodore in 1996 and later given the honorary position of Vice -President. However, as I aged falling into the water and struggling to get back into the boat took the edge off my sailing interest and I returned to full playing membership in 2000, since when I have been an active member serving on for a two year period on the Council 2012 -14 and then returning as Vice Captain last year. Currently the acting Greens Chairman.
I am, of course, extremely honoured to have been elected to the position of Club Captain and to joined the ranks of those red jacketed former incumbents of the position whose photos are displayed above the bar. So many of them I have known and still know as friends and fellow golf enthusiast and I hope that in accepting this office I will be able to maintain the strong traditions and high standards shown by my predecessors.
I think that in Maesdu we have one of the best golf “clubs” in North Wales. I emphasis the word Club because that is what we are; a group of golfers who have come together to enjoy the game we love. We have a wonderful course to play our game on and an excellent club house where we can socialise. So I hope that during my year a Club Captain we will all enjoy our club and hopefully enhance the camaraderie within our membership.
However, all this comes at a cost and to keep our costs/subscriptions down we must have and encourage visitors to use these facilities. So may I in this statement welcome all who come to play our course and ask all our membership to offer the hand of friendship and hospitality to our paying guests.
